Arts & Culture
Goldendale
is proud of its thriving artist community expressing a wide
variety of media, and anchored by a world-class museum overlooking
the spectacular Columbia River gorge.
The Golden Art Gallery, located in downtown Goldendale,
features fine art painters, potters, leather, wood, glass,
jewelers, sculptors, photographers and muralists. The gallery
supports a craft store called Picket Fences, also located
downtown.
Maryhill Museum of Art, home to a permanent exhibition of
75 sculptures by Auguste Rodin including the famed The Thinker,
is a must-see for any visitor to the area. The collection
also includes a life sized plaster of Eve from Rodin's famed
"Gates of Hell".
Further, the Museum has an extensive Native American collection,
international chess sets, Theatre de la Mode French fashions
of 1945, European and American paintings and much more.
Special exhibitions and programs keep the Museum fresh and
exciting each year.
The Presby Museum in downtown Goldendale, is a tribute to
the city’s early history. Built in 1902 by attorney
Winthrop B. Presby, the 20-room Queen Anne mansion is loaded
with period furniture, pioneer clothing, and a collection
of roughly 125 antique coffee mills.
With
a vibrant and up-and-coming wine culture, Klickitat County
is still Washington’s best-kept secret... although
the word is getting out! And, Goldendale is an ideal home
base for exploring the wineries in east Klickitat County
and beyond. The unique climate, breathtaking scenery, and
unpretentious personality of the winemakers make the Gorge
a great place to taste.
The Maryhill Winery, located just east of the Maryhill Museum,
is the area’s largest, featuring red wines with a
specialty in Sangiovese and Syrah. With an incredible view
of the Columbia River Gorge, the winery also boasts an outdoor
amphitheatre attracting nationally recognized artists such
as Willie Nelson, B.B. King, Amy Grant and many more.
