Outdoor Activities
The outdoors invites you!
Goldendale is at the center of unparalleled outdoor recreation
and natural attractions. Whether its hiking trails winding
through scenic Dalles Mountain Ranch, enjoying the profusion
of wild flowers while cycling the back roads of Klickitat
County, landing a world-class steelhead or simply passing
a warm summer day beneath the shade of a giant elm, Goldendale
and the surrounding area has something for the serious sportsman
or for family fun.
Choices abound with hiking, fishing, stargazing, horseback
riding, biking, hunting, rafting, golfing, motor cross, and
camping.
Goldendale
Observatory- star gazing at its best!
Goldendale Observatory State Park is a five-acre educational
facility on a 2,100-foot-high hilltop. The observatory houses
one of the nation's largest public telescopes and has attracted
sky-watchers since its opening in 1973. The observatory is
open to anyone who wants to view the universe and hosts a
number of Star Parties through the stargazing season. Check
our calendar of events for the next Star Party.
Columbia Hills State Park- including Horsethief Lake
and Dalles Mountain Ranch
Columbia Hills State Park is a 3,338-acre camping park with
7,500 feet of freshwater shoreline on the Columbia River.
Horsethief Butte dominates the skyline. It stands over the
lake like an ancient castle. The lake itself is about 90 acres
in size and is actually an impoundment of the Columbia River.
The lake was flooded into existence by the reservoir created
by The Dalles Dam. Pictographs can be easily viewed from hiking
trails.
Maryhill State Park- a river paradise
With a fruit stand, picnicing, swimming, and wine tasting,
Maryhill State Park is a 99-acre camping park with 4,700 feet
of waterfront on Columbia River. The park is significant for
its natural beauty, its access to the surrounding natural
wonders and its cultural history. A full-scale model of Stonehenge
stands near the park as a war memorial. This park is the perfect
cool place on a hot summer day.
Brooks Memorial Park- family fun at its best
Brooks Memorial State Park is a 700-acre, year-round camping
park located between the barren hills of the south Yakima
Valley and the lodgepole pine forests of the Simcoe Mountains.
The park provides a variety of natural environments for visitors
to enjoy. Light hiking, a small creek, and great picnic sites
make this park ideal for children and families.

Goldendale is a called the Sportsman’s Paradise for
a very good reason.
Public lands along Klickitat River 20 miles west of Goldendale
provide some of the best turkey and deer hunting in Eastern
Washington. Additionally, trophy deer and elk can be found
80,000 acres north of Goldendale in the foothills of the Simcoe
Mountain Range. This area is accessible by foot only, no motorized
vehicles. East of Goldendale, hunting is excellent along the
Bickelton Highway east of Rock Creek.
Hunters beware! Much land around Goldendale is private –
be sure to have an accurate map and permission to hunt on
any private property.

The Wild and Scenic Klickitat River is one of the state’s
longest free flowing rivers, stretching approximately 100
miles from its source to the mouth of the Columbia River.
With deep canyon walls and rugged hillsides, the river is
breathtakingly beautiful in any season. The supports both
healthy runs of Chinook Salmon (King), Silver Salmon (Coho),
the Pacific Northwest Steelhead, and Rainbow Trout. Strains
of both hatchery and wild steelhead return each year and proliferate
throughout the system during the fishing season.
Fishing licenses are available at McCready & Company in
downtown Goldendale and Corner Chevron on Highway 97 and Simcoe
Drive.
